DACIA Renault is using ABB robots at a car plant in Romania to boost the safety and production of the painting process.
The paint line at the Dacia plant was dark and filled with smoke and paint vapours prior to the robotic revolution.
At the time, Dacia was being integrated into the Renault group, so more and more car models and cars needed to be produced. To ensure the paint line could keep up with this increased volume, ABB’s robots were used to modernise the process.
In the project’s first phase, various solutions were taken into consideration. They had to accommodate the right level of paint shop automation, as well as the size of an air treatment station, since the plant didn’t have one.
ABB proposed an integrated solution which was effective, and met all the EU environmental requirements.
The new bumper painting line officially started production in February 2008. The ABB painting line system features ten IRB 5400 painting robots. Production has increased from 1,800 bumpers per day with the old line, to 2,500 bumpers per day. The number of cars the plant produces has also increased to 63 cars per hour compared to the previous 40 per hour.
